Not Your Grandpa's Sweater Vest

It’s no secret that I love 90s inspired fashion. I mean, in my opinion, the 90s is one of the best decades for fashion. Nonetheless, I also love the concept of  “A new take on an old classic” because it’s essentially 2 birds with one stone; you take something classic but give it a modern twist. And that is exactly what my knitted tank in today’s blog post is… a new take on an old classic.

For some reason, sweater vests have always gotten a bad rap, but it doesn’t have to continue that way any longer! Sweater vests have been around for years and years and usually they’re super plain and fall under dress code ‘semi-formal’. But with classic, 90s sportswear brands such as Fila, Reebok and Umbro continuing to put out new clothing collections, most styles including sweater vests are influenced by the fashion of the 90s.

I can't even begin to tell you guys how much I love this sweater vest from Fila! It was actually a pick up from last year, but I still continue to wear it as if I just bought it! I love everything about this sweater vest — from the color, to cut, to its simple design and of course, it’s 90s influence. However, instead of wearing it with a button-down underneath it like a traditional sweater vest pairing, I’ll just layer this on top of plain tees for a more modern, relaxed look.

Now, as far as bottoms go, I have worn this sweater vest with almost every color denim you can think of but my favorite way to pair it is with classic, vintage Levi’s. This pair of mid-rinse Levi’s are from a great vintage store here in Los Angeles called Belljar. A few quick cuffs and I’m good to go! White high-top Vans are also such a classic shoe so they work especially well with this look. Finally, I accessorized with my favorite watch from Daniel Wellington and my favorite pair of sunglasses from Tom Ford (similar ones linked here) to finish off the look.

Now lets say you wanted an even more simple look; this vest layered over a plain, black t-shirt and paired with black skinny jeans with minimal white sneakers would be an amazing way to wear it too! Talk about a minimal outfit with a pop of 90s influence! If you wanted to be more adventurous, you can actually find a lot of sweater vests similar to this one (whether Fila or other sportswear brands) from vintage stores, flea markets and online! That will most likely mean you’ll get a one-of-a-kind vintage knit, but you never know what you'll come across searching that way!

Sometimes there is nothing better than giving something classic a little sprucing up. Pieces like this sweater vest are not only interesting but also fun to style. What’s your favorite way to put a new twist on an old classic? Let me know in the comments below!
